According to reliable sources Fabrizio Romano and David Lynch, Ibrahima Konate is close to agreeing a new long term deal with the club. The Frenchman's current contract ends in the summer, but with Real Madrid’s interest fading it looks like the centre back will continue his stay on Merseyside. #

The 26-year-old centre-back joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 for £32 million. Since then, he has made 175 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and lifting the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Community Shield.

Real Madrid Interest Cooled

It has been no secret that Real Madrid were heavily considering following their protocol of signing players on a free when their contracts run out with Konate being their latest target. With the centre backs performances this year being way below par from the season prior, the Spanish side withdrew their interest.

The Reds have been trying to get this contract over the line since October of last year, but it was clear Konate’s preference was to leave the club once the season ended. After a recent round of talks being “positive” according to strong media outlets, it looks like all has been forgiven between both parties.

Depth Deciding Factors

With senior players Mohammed Salah and Andrew Robertson leaving at the end of the season, it was a breath of fresh air for Liverpool supporters to hear the Frenchman is looking likely to extend his stay.

Arne Slot will have plenty of choice for the centre half position next season, with the club bringing in Jeremy Jacquet who will join up with the squad in the summer, alongside Giovanni Leoni’s pending return, there are some really strong choices for the Dutch manager. Virgil Van Dijk is entering the final stages of his tenure at the club, so it is vital that the likes of Konate stick around to reassure Liverpool supporters the future of their backline is in safe hands.
