New Era, Old Problems :
Liverpool’s WSL Fight Intensifies
By Malaika Khan
More than three months into the new era, the early signs of progress that once offered optimism now feel distant. What initially looked like the foundations of a clear identity and renewed belief has given way to poor performances, heavy defeats, and mounting pressure at the bottom end of the table. While there have been moments of resilience and individual quality, they have been overshadowed by performances and results that underline just how difficult this transition has become.

Tough Defeat Away
A tough defeat away from home for Liverpool, who battled hard and even saw Beata Olsson continue her impressive scoring form. Despite their resilience, Arsenal fully deserved the win after controlling long stretches of the match and creating the greater number of chances. Goalkeeper Faye Kirby delivered a standout performance that kept her side in the contest far longer than expected, but in the end Arsenal’s persistence was rewarded with the late winner their dominance deserved.
Poor Outing
A poor outing from Liverpool as they fell to another defeat following a deeply disappointing performance against Aston Villa. Liverpool had hoped to build on recent signs of improvement but instead delivered a display lacking intensity, cohesion, and composure. From the outset Villa seized control, and all three goals conceded came from lapses in concentration and poor judgement. Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target, underlining their ineffectiveness in the final third.

Humiliating Defeat
Chelsea delivered a dominant performance as Liverpool suffered a humiliating 9-1 defeat, a result that fell well short of acceptable standards. From start to finish, the Reds were second best in every department and unable to cope with Chelsea’s relentless intensity, movement, and quality. The scoreline reflected the gulf between the two sides, exposing serious issues that need urgent attention if Liverpool are to compete at this level. While there was a brief moment of consolation, it did little to disguise the scale of the shortcomings on display.
Hard Fought Point
Beata Olsson struck late to rescue Liverpool and earn a priceless point against West Ham United in a tense clash between the WSL’s bottom two. In a game full of momentum swings and drama, Olsson’s composure in the closing stages ensured Liverpool were rewarded for their resilience, denying West Ham what had looked like a crucial home victory. Despite playing with ten players for the majority of the match, Liverpool showed tremendous character to come back twice. West Ham dominated large spells and created numerous chances but lacked the clinical edge required, with the draw leaving Liverpool winless and rooted to the bottom of the table, two points behind their hosts.
Looking Ahead
Liverpool now face a battle to retain their WSL status in the second half of the season. Currently on a mid-season break, they return to action on Sunday 11th January with a fixture against London City Lionesses that could prove pivotal in shaping their survival hopes. Off the pitch, the club have moved to strengthen their squad with the signing of Alice Bergstrom from BK Hacken, with the Swedish international becoming the first addition of the winter transfer window. The versatile right-sided player is expected to add depth and quality as Liverpool look to turn their season around.
