Liverpool Women travel to the Valley in a huge FA Cup quarter final match-up against Charlton Athletic, giving Gareth Taylor’s side a massive opportunity to progress into the final four. The Reds will be high on confidence following their 3-2 win away in the Merseyside derby against Everton last weekend. The hosts on the other hand will be hoping to bounce back, three losses in their last four has led to Charlton falling to second in the Women's Super League 2.
Building on momentum:
Gareth Taylor’s side are now unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions, a favourable draw has given his side a chance to progress into the FA Cup semi finals. The away side will be coming into this the favourites, but the Reds need to keep their composure and deny any chance of an underdog story.
Form guide:
Liverpool now sit 10th in the WSL after picking up 13 points from their previous seven games. Charlton on the other hand have been on the losing side in their last two games, prior to those matches Karen Hill’s side went on a 19 game unbeaten run in all competitions, showing they are more than capable of handling the WSL if they were to get promoted. They currently sit second, level on points with Birmingham, only behind on goal difference.
Players to watch:
Ceri Holland is currently in an incredible run of form, picking up three goals and an assist in her last four games for the Reds, she also picked up an assist on international duty with Wales. Beata Olsson is also playing some great football at the moment, the Sweden international has found the net twice in her last four fixtures, while also adding an assist to her tally.
For the hosts, Amalie Thesturp is the player to look out for, she has scored twice in her last three games for Charlton and is also their top scorer in the FA Cup with three goals.
The magic of the cup:
Despite going into this game as the favourites, not many people will be expecting the Reds to lift the trophy. Providing Liverpool get the job done on Sunday, they are only two games away from a trophy in the cabinet, something not a single person could have foreseen a few months ago.
Patience is needed:
In a game like this, the home side will just sit back and let the Reds control the game and try to hit on the break or make something happen from a set piece. Liverpool just need to stay patient, and opportunities will come by, when they arrive it is just about putting the ball in the back of the net.
A must win:
This is a fixture the Reds can not afford to lose, with the current form on their side, a loss in this game would be a massive dagger to Gareth Taylor’s team.
Prediction:
I think the away side will come away with a 1-3 victory.
