From AIK to Anfield, Liverpool’s newest superstar

by Jack Hughes

Liverpool had a very busy transfer window this summer, signing the likes of Milos Kirkez from Bournemouth, Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz.

However, despite already bolstering their title winning lineup with these aforementioned superstars, and Ekitike hitting the ground running with three goals in his first three games, the champions went back into the market for a striker, and on deadline day the Reds finally secured the signature of long term target Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a Premier League record 125 million pound fee.

There’s no doubt on the ability of the Swedish striker, but with so many attacking options already in the squad it’s interesting to see where he’ll play in Arne Slot’s new look starting line up.

Isak has amassed 44 Premier League goals over the last two seasons with 54 in England’s top flight across his career with the Geordies. This also includes his winning goal against his future club in the 2024 Carabao Cup final.

Last season, Isak and the Egyptian king Mo Salah totalled a ridiculous 52 league goals while also registering 24 assists between them, with a total of 76 combined goal involvements for their respective clubs. If the two forwards can find anything similar to their 2024/25 form then they will be a frightening partnership.

The Swede may be a superstar now, but the journey in football hasn’t been easy for the 25-year-old.

He started his career at AIK Football in his native Sweden before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2017 at the age of 18, however he failed to establish himself in the first team with future Arsenal captain Aubameyang before him in the pecking order.

A loan move to Dutch outfit Willem II at the age of 20 saw him return 14 goals in just 18 appearances, but despite this insane goal ratio he was sold to Real Sociedad in the summer of 2019.

In Real San Sebastián, the Scandinavian really made his mark, scoring 44 goals in 132 appearances in all competitions. After three years in Spain, the newly Saudi owned Newcastle United splashed their new found cash to smash their transfer record by spending £60 million on the then 22-year-old.

After helping Newcastle end their 70 year long wait for a trophy, the English Champions came calling and Isak signed on the dotted line, breaking the English transfer record, and becoming the third most expensive player in the history of the sport.

There’s a lot of pressure on Isak now, the price tag will be a lot to live up to, but there’s no doubt he was born to play for a club the size of Liverpool.
