Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by West Ham United at St Helens Stadium on Sunday afternoon, following a sixth-minute own goal by Cornelia Kapocs. Despite dominating possession and registering 11 shots on goal, the hosts were unable to find an equaliser against a resolute defence. The defeat dismissed any immediate hopes of extending Liverpool's five-match unbeaten run in all competitions, and forced Gareth Taylor's side to confront an alarming trend. The Reds have now failed to win any of their 10 Women's Super League matches when conceding the opening goal, leaving them with clear attacking inefficiencies that must be addressed.
The Match:
Gareth Taylor maintained an attacking setup for Liverpool, fielding a front line that featured Kapocs, Beata Olsson, and Alice Bergstrom. However, the hosts were immediately challenged by West Ham's aggressive start. The visitors issued an early warning when Viviane Asseyi fired straight at goalkeeper Jennifer Falk from inside the penalty area. Moments later, the deadlock was broken. Shekiera Martinez flicked on an Asseyi corner, which the unfortunate Kapocs inadvertently directed over her own goalline at the back post.
Liverpool acknowledged the early setback and increased their workload to respond quickly. Olsson and Jenna Clark forced Kinga Szemik into saves, while Asseyi continued to test Falk with a curling effort that required a low stop. The home side nearly drew level just before the break; a Ceri Holland daisycutter went narrowly wide, and captain Grace Fisk saw her header from a corner cleared off the line by Estelle Cascarino.
Frustration mounts for the Reds:
The hosts laid the foundations for a sustained attack at the beginning of the second period, creating three clear-cut opportunities within 10 minutes of the restart. However, Olsson and Kapocs failed to add a finishing touch to threatening crosses, and Bergstrom was thwarted by a block from Eva Nystrom.
Liverpool continued to press, but struggled to break down a West Ham side that won 57% of their aerial duels and made 30 clearances. In the 64th minute, Cascarino produced another goal-line intervention to deny a Bergstrom header. Substitute Anna Josendal watched a curling effort drift just wide as the game entered its final stages. Despite late substitutions, including the introduction of Denise O'Sullivan and Mia Enderby, Liverpool managed just three shots on target and came up short. The result leaves the squad seeking solutions before they travel to face league leaders Manchester City next Sunday for their final away game of the WSL campaign.
Player of the Match:
Jennifer Falk emphasised her reliability despite the defeat, producing several sharp saves to keep Liverpool within striking distance. The goalkeeper denied Viviane Asseyi multiple times, ensuring the early defensive lapse did not worsen, and maintained a steady composure under pressure to give her side every chance of a potential comeback.
The Reds play Manchester City next, on Sunday 3rd May.
