Arne Slot Press Conference: Sunderland (A)

Liverpool head to the Stadium of Light with no margin for error left to play with. After a damaging late collapse against Manchester City, Arne Slot faced the media knowing exactly how thin the line has become between progress and consequence.

Arne Slot Knows ‘Perfection’ is Need of the Hour

Slot was blunt when asked about the standard Liverpool must now hit to claw their way back into the Champions League places. With rivals ahead continuing to collect points, anything less than near-flawless form will not be enough.

“To close the gap of 4-5 points towards number 3, 4, 5, means you have to win. And that's not what we've done this season. That's why that has to be better; we have to come close to perfection.”

The 2-1 defeat against Man City, which could have gone a lot worse, underlined how quickly situations can unravel at this level.

“Seven minutes before the end we were five points behind City. And five minutes later, we were eleven points behind,” Slot admitted.

“I've To Give Lot of Credit to My Players”

Despite repeated setbacks, Slot stressed that his squad’s response has rarely dipped, even when results have failed to follow performances.

In the last 10 games, Liverpool have only managed 4 wins…more like, scraped them. They have drawn 4 more and lost 2 in that time. So, that means the Reds have only managed one victory this calendar year (4-1 vs. Newcastle).

“So many times we didn't get what we deserved, but every three days later they showed up again and brought in a good performance, which not always led to a win.”

Slot was clear that Liverpool have only been comprehensively outplayed on rare occasions.

“There were only three halves this season where the other team was far better than us. Crystal Palace, Man City, and maybe Arsenal away in parts of the first half."

“From the last 5,6 games, I've gotten a lot of confidence, but we need to bring that confidence into better results.”

Sunderland Deserve a Lot of Credit

Sunderland’s unbeaten home record, 7Ws and 5Ds, has not gone unnoticed, especially given the calibre of opposition they have already faced. And that's why our boss decided to give the Black Cats their flowers.

“That tells you how good of a season they are having,” Slot said, while adding, “They’ve already played against City and Arsenal at home, so that tells you how strong and good they are at home.”

Slot also highlighted the scale of Sunderland’s achievement as a newly promoted side.

“If you are promoted and you come into the Premier League and you do so well, that is a big compliment to their players and to their manager.”

Team news

Liverpool will be without a key figure, Dominic Szoboszlai, after a late red card against City, something Slot admitted was still weighing heavily on the squad.

“His main disappointment was that we lost the game after him scoring such a great goal. Being so close to a result… of course the emotions are also there by getting a red card and missing out on a Sunderland game.”

Injuries and constant changes have continued to test Liverpool’s rhythm, particularly at the back, with Slot again pointing to disruption across multiple positions rather than one isolated problem.

However, despite outside noise, Slot has no plans to deviate from his approach.  So, that likely means unpopular choices, like Cody Gakpo, retaining their place in the XI. Alisson is also expected to start, with Slot brushing aside concerns over passing metrics and stressing that context matters: he is a top shot-stopper still.

Now, Liverpool head to Sunderland unbeaten in their last five meetings (2W, 3D). But with perfection now the demand as Slot said, "If we don't have Champions League football [next season], it's definitely not acceptable." There is little margin left for error.
