Liverpool v Southampton: Preview

by Jimmy Johnson

Following a hard-fought win in the Merseyside Derby over Everton at the weekend, Liverpool will return to action on Tuesday night against Southampton in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table with 15 points from five games and are yet to drop a point so far.

Will their excellent league form carry over into the EFL Cup?

The Reds have endured a taxing schedule lately - as such, don’t be surprised to see more than a few changes made to the starting lineup.

Predicted XI

Mamardashvili, Bradley, Gomez, Konate, Robertson, Jones, Gravenberch, Chiesa, Nyoni, Ngumoha, Isak

Injury News

Currently, Liverpool have no outstanding injury concerns. Curtis Jones was a doubt before the Everton game - however, these doubts were extinguished when he came on as a substitute in the 61st minute.

Match Prediction

Of course, Liverpool will enter this game as the betting favourites. Not only are Southampton in the league below the Reds, they’ve also had a tough start to the season. The Saints are 19th in the Championship table with just six points from six games.

With that being said, Southampton certainly shouldn’t be overlooked. They have dangerous attacking players in their squad, such as Samuel Edozie, Tom Fellows and Cameron Archer - all of whom will be chomping at the bit for a Premier League scalp.

Nevertheless, Liverpool should have more than enough quality to see them off. They have dealt with superior attacking talent this season, therefore, should be able to nullify anything Southampton can throw at them.

Additionally, with nine goals conceded so far this season, Southampton have been leaky at the back and may struggle to contain Liverpool’s blitzkrieg.

Result: Liverpool 3-0 Southampton
