Five Potential Successors to Arne Slot

By Tahmid Habib

Speculation around Arne Slot's future at Liverpool continues to build. While the club maintains its support for now, discussions about potential successors are already underway. Should Liverpool decide to make a change, several compelling candidates from across European football could emerge as realistic options.

From innovative young coaches to decorated champions, here are five managers who might be considered for the Anfield hot seat.

Cesc Fàbregas: The Modern Tactician with Liverpool DNA

At 38, Cesc Fàbregas might seem an unconventional choice, but his credentials make him one of the most intriguing names in European football. The Spaniard has impressed during his time at Como, where his progressive tactical approach has turned heads across Italy.

In a 2024 interview with SportBIBLE, Fàbregas revealed his admiration for Liverpool, describing them as the fanbase he wished he could have played for during his career. His tactical blueprint is distinctly modern.

Como deploy a fluid 4-2-3-1 system built around creating numerical superiority in key areas. They deliberately invite pressure before exploiting space with incisive, vertical passing.

Their league leading tally of 725-line breaking passes reflects Fàbregas' core philosophy: stretch the opposition wide, overload central zones, and strike when gaps emerge.

Drawing from mentors like Wenger, Guardiola, Mourinho, Conte, and Del Bosque, Fàbregas has forged his own identity defined by intelligence, ambition, and tactical precision. Reports suggest he turned down approaches from Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen to continue his project at Como.

That combination of loyalty, tactical sophistication, and ambition aligns with Liverpool's values. The lack of Premier League experience is a legitimate concern, but the club has successfully backed potential before.

Zinedine Zidane: The Ultimate Winner

Some names transcend ambition. Zinedine Zidane is one of them. A three-time Champions League winner as manager, Zidane's achievements at Real Madrid speak volumes.

He successfully managed a dressing room filled with superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, and Luka Modrić, delivering consistent success at the highest level.

Since departing Madrid, Zidane has remained selective, waiting for a project that matches his standards. His arrival at Anfield would instantly command respect, and his proven ability to manage elite players could galvanise Liverpool's squad.

The question isn't whether Zidane could succeed at Liverpool it's whether Liverpool represents the project he's waiting for.

Xavi Hernández: Vision Meets Volatility

Xavi's tenure at Barcelona told two contrasting stories. On one hand, he delivered a La Liga title, tactical excellence, and some of Europe's most attractive football. On the other, he battled political turmoil that ultimately ended his reign in 2024.

At his peak, Xavi restored Barcelona's positional dominance and structural clarity following years of instability. The 2022/23 league triumph showcased his tactical acumen and ability to implement his philosophy.

His departure from Camp Nou appears to reflect challenging circumstances rather than coaching inadequacy. Liverpool's emphasis on technical quality and youth development naturally aligns with Xavi's footballing principles. However, the turbulent nature of his Barcelona exit might give both parties pause before committing to each other.

Gareth Southgate: The Stability Candidate

Gareth Southgate managing Liverpool would surprise many, but his credentials warrant consideration.

The England manager has reached two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, demonstrating his ability to build cohesive teams, establish clear structures, and navigate high pressure situations.

His strength lies in creating unity and managing expectations rather than tactical innovation at club level. While his international success is impressive, Liverpool may prefer a manager with a more distinctive tactical identity and proven club pedigree.

Southgate remains an outsider, but his availability and experience keep him in the conversation.

Marco Rose: Familiar Energy, Uncertain Track Record

Marco Rose's coaching philosophy mirrors Jürgen Klopp's high intensity approach. His work at RB Leipzig demonstrated quality: aggressive pressing, dynamic wide play, and youth development.

However, his dismissal in March 2025 following domestic difficulties and Champions League disappointments has raised questions about his suitability for an elite club. While Rose's style fits Liverpool's traditional identity, his inconsistent results make him an unlikely frontrunner.

The Verdict

Each candidate offers something different.

Fàbregas represents long-term vision and tactical innovation, Zidane brings unparalleled credibility and winning pedigree while Xavi offers identity-driven football with proven success, Southgate provides stability and proven man-management and Rose delivers familiar high-energy football with question marks attached.

For now, Arne Slot has the opportunity to reverse current trends. But should Liverpool decide change is necessary, they have options ranging from exciting young innovators to legendary figures of world football.
