Liverpool have suffered back-to-back defeats in the league, after conceding a late goal from Manchester City’s Rebecca Knaak. The hosts needed nothing but a win after losing foot in the title race, and after 90 tense minutes, Knaak headed in the winner.
The Match:
The Reds started the match with a fantastic pace, some early chances within the first few minutes gave the away side some real confidence they can get something from the game.
The best of those early opportunities came from a set piece, a ball whipped in from the right-hand side found captain Grace Fisk in the box, but her effort struck the post.
Manchester City were the much better side following the break, the home side missed some great chances of their own. Jennifer Falk was forced to make some unbelievable stops to keep the score all square, her most impressive being a one on one save to deny Kerolin in the 63rd minute.
Despite the keeper's best efforts a breakthrough was made, Alex Greenwood’s corner from the left was swung into the danger zone, Rebecca Knaak got on the end of it, and the ball trickled into the back of the net.
Evaluation:
A disappointing loss for the Reds, now means they have suffered back to back defeats in the league. They will be gutted to have lost so late in the game, after making City work relentlessly, but can still end the season on a high.
The Reds play Brighton next, on Sunday 10th May in the FA Cup Semi-finals.
