April proved to be a month of extremes for Liverpool, shaped by long breaks, high drama and a frustrating return to league action. With just two matches played either side of an international pause, the Reds experienced both the highs of cup success and the lows of a disappointing league defeat , leaving momentum finely balanced heading into the final stretch of the season.
FA Cup Breakthrough:
Liverpool booked their place in the semi-finals for a second consecutive season, but were pushed all the way by a resilient Charlton Athletic side.
In a tense and often frustrating contest, chances came and went, with neither side able to find a breakthrough in normal time. As the game stretched into extra time, it felt like it would take something special to separate them. That moment arrived in unforgettable fashion.
Eighteen-year-old Zara Shaw, a Scouser making her long-awaited return from an ACL injury, stepped off the bench to deliver the decisive blow. In her first appearance in over a year, Shaw etched her name into the story of the season, firing home the winner to seal a 1–0 victory and send Liverpool into the final four.
It was a moment of pure drama, and one that encapsulated the magic of the cup.
International Break Disruption:
The victory was followed by a three-week pause in domestic action due to the international break, a period that halted Liverpool’s rhythm at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Flat Return To The Action:
Any momentum built from their cup success failed to carry over on their return, as Liverpool produced an underwhelming display against West Ham. The game was decided early, with an unfortunate own goal from Cornelia Kapocs in just the sixth minute handing the visitors the advantage. But while the goal proved decisive, the performance itself will be the greater concern.
Liverpool struggled to impose themselves, lacking sharpness in attack and creativity in the final third. Despite spells of possession, they rarely looked like breaking through a well-organised West Ham side, leaving a sense of frustration at full-time.
Big Month Ahead:
There is little time to dwell, with a defining run of fixtures on the horizon. Liverpool travel to face Manchester City this Sunday in a crucial league encounter, before attention quickly turns back to the FA Cup. A semi-final clash against Brighton & Hove Albion offers the chance to reach a major final, while the league campaign concludes with a challenging fixture against Arsenal .
