Napoli Considering a Second Bid for Federico Chiesa - Media Watch

By Steven Northover

Having been linked - and close to signing - the forward in the Summer, the Serie A leaders Napoli appear to still be keen to purchase the Italian in January. After joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024, Chiesa had an initially slow start to his Anfield career, playing just six times for Liverpool in the Premier League on their way to a 20th Premier League title. Despite this, he made a name for himself as a dependable winger, who could come on and change games when required. Notably with a brace of assists against Southampton in the League Cup in September 2025.

Cult Hero in The Making

Off the pitch, his comments cemented his reputation as a ‘cult hero' within the fan base...

“When I hear the word Liverpool, I think of trophies, of victories and the great nights in the
Champions League at Anfield. It’s really emotional for me.
I will give everything for this shirt and for the fans.” - Federico Chiesa

Story of The Potential Transfer

His appearances have improved this season, and at one point seemed likely to replace the faltering Mo Salah in attack. However, Salah’s return to form appears to have restricted his appearances once again. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa still remains a favourite in his homeland. Having made his name at Juventus, his career was curtailed by an ACL injury that kept him out of football for the best part of a year.

Despite returning to fitness to play, he wasn’t able to regain his form at Juventus and was sold to Liverpool for €10 million in 2024. But with his lack of appearances, other Italian teams have been drawn to a player desperate to return to the level he was at before.

Despite Liverpool's riches upfront, they're surprisingly light on the right wing. Liverpool’s only other recognised Right Winger is Mohammed Salah, who is expected to be going to the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Outside of the Egyptian, without Chiesa, Liverpool would be left having to work with ‘makeshift’ wingers such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong.

So naturally, it would be likely for Liverpool to go out and replace Chiesa if he were to leave, which seems unlikely - given the finances involved, especially after the expenditure during the summer. Plus, there is plenty of evidence that the Italian wants to stay at Liverpool...

“I’m happy with what I’m doing. ... Personally I think I’m giving a lot to the team, to the fans and
I want to keep doing that in order to win in the future. ... That’s the main reason I’m doing this.
Obviously, I want to stay here.”

Of course, he may not have a choice, should Napoli come in with a high enough bid. But it seems unlikely, given the difficulty of finding a player of enough quality to be an understudy for Mo Salah who would also be willing not to play most games, to join in January. So in all likelihood, if a bid is to come, it's probably going to happen in the Summer. In that case, both the player and club would be more open to a transfer.
