After today's defeat away to Brighton, Arne Slot should be relived of his duties as manager of Liverpool Football Club. To me, it is not even the performances that are the issue, especially since I was prepared to give Slot time to adapt to the multitude of new signings and injuries, just like Klopp. To me, it is the blatant disrespect shown by the Dutch manager.
Slot has revealed a clear preference for certain players. We saw his fiery side in the great Salah debacle of late 2025. For a player who famously avoided the press like the plague, Salah’s confession about Slot’s lack of belief in him was very believable and worrying. What was even more worrying was Slot’s blatant disregard for his concern, instead focusing on snide remarks directed at the Egyptian and ensuring everyone didn’t view him as “weak”. However, this side of him was nowhere to be found when it came to Van Dijk. The manager chose not to criticise his fellow countryman, despite the captain’s error leading to a Bournemouth goal and an eventual defeat. Even the most diehard Liverpool fan was blaming him!
That’s not to say has never criticised the team. His repeated admissions that Liverpool struggles against low blocks were appreciated, but fans’ patience was wearing thin as he refused to do anything about it. He also snapped at a reporter who questioned him about the lack of faith from the club's fans, calling it surprising and choosing to laud his own Premier League win (with Klopp's system, might I add).
Speaking of Klopp, he even (possibly unintentionally) insulted the Liverpool icon, comparing Liverpool’s Champions League direct Round of 16 qualification this season to Klopp’s Europa League failure. Not only were you disrespecting the man who brought a whole new belief to Anfield, but you were also riling up the Liverpool faithful who were already out for blood after terrible string of results.
As much as he dished it, Slot has been terrible at handling criticism. Most recently, he lashed out at a reporter for asking about certain decisions he had made. When criticised about his odd player selections, he claimed people are unaware of fitness issues. Does he not realise we’ve seen perfectly fit players sat on the bench as he picks mediocre players (ahem, Gakpo, ahem) over them? Also, could he not have made some moves in the January window after letting Guehi slip away?
It’s not just fans, it’s also Liverpool legends who have found Slot’s tactics and comments odd. Steven Gerrard echoed fans' sentiments that it was disrespectful for the manager to say our Premier League win last season happened because Paris Saint-Germain eliminated us from the Champions League (Why is this man obsessed with PSG, by the way?). He also commented on how he played against low blocks and that Slot should stop using that as an excuse for poor performances. Slot handled this with his usual care-free attitude, even sending compliments Stevie’s way, in what I think was a backhanded manner.
It is sufficient to say that Slot has not handled media well in his time as Liverpool manager thus far. This latest league defeat is another reminder of what has been a shambles of a title defence and with the club now entering the international break, the curtain should now fall on Slot's 21 months in charge.
