Liverpool achieved their first win at home in the league against Brighton with a convincing 2-0 win. The hosts prevailed to victory with an unfortunate own goal from Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross and another goal to seal the win with a composed finish from Alexander Isak.
Liverpool closed the gap to Brighton by one point and Liverpool sit fourth in the table.

Lineups and Tactical Adjustments

Andoni Iraola made four changes to his starting line-up following Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Villarreal, with Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Bradley Barcola returning to the starting XI. However, Liverpool remained without Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong through injury, while Victor Muñoz was also unavailable. The Reds lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Wirtz operating behind Isak and Barcola and Cody Gakpo providing width in attack.

The Match

Liverpool began the first half with attacking intent, although Brighton also threatened in the opening exchanges. Liverpool took the lead when Florian Wirtz fired a low effort towards goal, which deflected off Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross and into the net for an own goal. The hosts quickly capitalised on their advantage when Bradley Barcola delivered a precise ball into the penalty area, where Alexander Isak applied a composed finish to double Liverpool’s lead. The two quick goals boosted Liverpool’s confidence and gave them greater control heading into half-time.

Brighton pushed more players forward after half-time in an attempt to reduce the deficit and put Liverpool under greater pressure. Then Liverpool’s first substitution came in the 65th minute, when Trey Nyoni replaced Florian Wirtz, who appeared to be carrying an injury concern. Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas later came on for Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak as Liverpool looked to maintain their advantage.

Brighton’s more attacking approach left spaces for Liverpool to exploit on the counter-attack, while the substitutions helped the hosts maintain their shape and manage the game. Brighton then continued searching for a breakthrough, but Liverpool remained organised and limited their opponents’ opportunities. Their disciplined performance ensured they preserved their two-goal lead and secured a clean sheet.

The Final Whistle

Liverpool remained composed during the closing stages as Brighton continued searching for a way back into the contest. The hosts maintained their defensive organisation, limiting the visitors’ opportunities and protecting their two-goal advantage. As the final whistle confirmed a 2–0 victory, Liverpool secured an important three points, while Brighton were left frustrated by their inability to turn their second-half pressure into a goal.

Conclusion and standout performers

Ronald Araújo was Liverpool’s standout performer, earning Man of the Match recognition for his outstanding defensive work, crucial blocks and contribution to the opening goal. Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak also impressed, combining effectively for the second goal.

However, Cody Gakpo’s inconsistent decision-making in the final third highlighted an area for improvement, with several promising attacks failing to produce a finish. The victory moved Liverpool up to fourth in the Premier League, marking an important first home league win under Andoni Iraola and extending their winning run in all competitions to four matches.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea, before Arsenal visit Anfield in the league. Liverpool showed greater intensity and defensive determination, although their second-half attacking threat will need improvement.
