The Reds have taken a major step toward reshaping their backline. Yet, this high-profile arrival immediately forces manager Andoni Iraola to confront a familiar, compounding risk.
For Araujo, the move represents a necessary escape from a tactical setup where he no longer fits. The 27-year-old lost his starting place last season to Gerard Martin, who formed a formidable partnership in the heart of the backline with Pau Cubarsi, Spain's standout youngster at the World Cup. It is a striking fall for a player who, in late 2023, was the subject of rumoured €80 million bids from Bayern Munich before Barcelona held off. Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jeremy Jacquet have long been recognised as injury-prone, while Giovani Leoni and Conor Bradley are still recovering from their own physical setbacks. Adding Araujo to this mix, a player who missed 31 matches in the 2024/25 campaign with a hamstring tear and another 10 matches last season with a muscle tear, is a massive gamble.
This physical reality raises a fundamental question about Liverpool's recruitment strategy.
