Player of the Week - Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak walked into Portman Road on Friday and did what the very best strikers do. He made a difficult game look simple, scored twice before most supporters had finished settling into their seats, and sent Liverpool home with three points and set the stage for the new manager, Iraola, to finally get a win. The second half was quieter, with Gravenberch replacing him after the hour mark as Andoni Iraola looked to manage the game safely home, but by that point Isak had already done everything that needed doing. His tally for the Premier League season now stands at three goals in three games, matching his entire output from last season in less than 270 minutes of football.

Iraola noted after the match that Isak had been brilliant in training all week and that his movement in behind was causing problems before the game even started. That preparation showed on every single touch he took at Portman Road.

Context and What It Means

This performance mattered beyond the goals. Liverpool had drawn their opening two Premier League fixtures against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, both finishing 2-2, and while the results were not disastrous, the search for a win was still there, and draws are not the results that make a team challenge for titles. That is precisely the kind of situation that puts pressure on a striker. Isak answered it by scoring twice in ten minutes and removing any doubt about where this Liverpool side was headed.

There had been quiet questions about whether Isak could consistently deliver the numbers his transfer fee demanded after a modest return last season. Those questions look very different now. This is a player who looks sharper, more confident and more integrated into the way Iraola wants to play than at any previous point in his Liverpool career. The partnership with Gakpo in particular is developing into something genuinely dangerous. Two goals from two Gakpo assists in one game suggests that combination is becoming a deadly duo in the league.

For Liverpool, this win gives them five points from three games and the kind of momentum that makes the fixtures ahead feel a little less daunting.

The Verdict

Three goals in three Premier League games is the form of a golden boot contender. There were strong performances across the division on Saturday, with several forwards catching the eye, but none of them did what Isak did. He won the game within just the first ten minutes, and if he had been a bit luckier, he would have scored a hat-trick in the first half

If Gakpo keeps finding him in those channels and Isak keeps finishing the way he did at Portman Road, opposition defences are going to find very few answers. Liverpool have their striker firing at the right time, and the rest of the Premier League defences would have a lot on their hands to handle
