"You have given me some of the best memories of my career.
"That penalty in Istanbul when I just arrived, a nickname that will always follow me, the Kop sound, the Premier League, the run of titles and trophies.
"Your incredible Scouse accent, feeling close to you even during COVID, incredible teammates, being part of that amazing mural forever and the feeling that I will never walk alone because I will always carry you with me.”
His final season at boyhood club Real Betis culminated in the club qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2005, and two years after joining from Liverpool.
Never considered a starter for Liverpool, the Spaniard instead became a trusted deputy for Alison Becker, and something of a mentor for the emerging Caoimhín Kelleher.
As Alison's deputy, he had a hand (excuse the pun) in some of Liverpool's most important wins of that era - playing eleven times in the league in his debut season, and being part of a Liverpool team that went on to win their first Premier League title in 30 years.
But as effectively Liverpool's third choice ‘keeper, his starting opportunities were always going to be limited, especially after the aforementioned emergence of Kelleher. So it's a testament to his commitment to the cause that he stayed at Liverpool for just under five years.
Jürgen Klopp, following Liverpool's penalty shootout win against Chelsea in the 2019 European Super Cup, said of Adrian,
“To be as prepared as I was today is incredible. He's not just a great person on the field, he's great in the locker room too. He's shown me that. He deserves it; it was just the luck of the penalty shootout, but he played very well in the match. He was the icing on the cake,"
Wherever Adrian ends up in the next stage of his career and life, he'll always have those four glorious years at Liverpool - and he will always be a part of their illustrious history.
