Chelsea FC returned to winning ways in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with a controlled 2-0 victory over Liverpool FC at Kingsmeadow, reaffirming their status as one of England’s dominant sides despite recent inconsistencies.
The Blues’ performance was a measured combination of tactical discipline and individual brilliance, providing fans with a reminder of their quality and depth. The women in Reds tried to capitalise on intelligent build-up play, before Lauren James sealed the win with a brilliant long-range strike midway through the second half. The Blues sealed their third position in the league after a massive victory.
How the game played out?
Goals from Sjoeke Nusken and Lauren James secured three important points. Chelsea dominated possession from the start, moving the ball with much patience. Despite the good control from Chelsea, Liverpool tried to break the line up. The breakthrough came just before the interval. Nusken arrived at the right moment inside the box and finished calmly after sharp build-up play. It was a goal that reflected Chelsea’s persistence! From there, the Blues were able to dictate the rhythm on their terms.
Liverpool were organised and compact, further limiting the Blues to controlled possession rather than clear chances, but the problem came in transition. When they won the ball, the support was too far away. Forward passes lacked precision and attacks became much rushed and isolated. Lauren James came out as a star performer, as she sealed victory for Chelsea in the 65th minute. She set the tone for Chelsea, beyond her goal involvement, her decision making gave Chelsea control in decisive moments.
Chelsea was sharper in terms of decision making, compared to Liverpool, though the Reds defended well. Their attacking play cost them, creating eight chances but only having two on target. At this level, efficiency not effort separated the outcome.
What does this win do?
Liverpool are still one point clear of the bottom of the table, although Leicester have a game in hand. They now face Everton in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday 22nd February, with kick-off at 16:30 GMT. The Reds will be aiming to progress further in the competition, but they face strong opposition.
