Dominik Szoboszlai Extends Stay at Liverpool

Arriving at Anfield for £60 million in 2023, the 25-year-old has gone on to make 147 appearances in all competitions and is fast becoming an undroppable part of the Reds' first team. Indeed, with vice-captain Andrew Robertson leaving the club this summer, Szoboszlai has long been seen as his successor, and by extension club captain once Virgil Van Dijk's time at the club comes to an end. 

In a statement, Szoboszlai Stated, 

“It’s maybe my biggest day…. There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three."

“Very happy. [I] can’t wait to go again and again and again. I’m just happy to be here, as I said many times.”

The Hungarian Captain, capped 65 times, was at times the Reds' star player in a largely forgettable season last term, with notable goals against Arsenal and Manchester City. This cemented him as one of Liverpool's most important players, with a growing sense that tying him down to a long-term contract as a matter of urgency. 

With the journeys of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andrew Robertson coming to the end of their contracts, there was an underlying tension that Szoboszlai would become yet another player Liverpool had let go for free in recent years.

However, despite rumours linking a move to Real Madrid, his agent came out publicly to deny there was any truth that he was planning to move on stating,

"Not to mention, Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and Dominik is in a position within the team that has a lot of reserve, so we are not looking outside or elsewhere."

Indeed, this Summer has been as much about maintaining Liverpool's quality players as it has been about bringing quality in. So, keeping hold of one of the best central midfielders in Europe is a real statement of intent from a club that has appeared on the back foot in recent months. 

Now even more so, especially with the announcement that CEO of Football Operations Michael Edwards and Director of Football Richard Hughes are both set to leave the club in recent weeks. 

There are still holes in the squad, notably someone to replace Salah, and questions remain as to whether the Reds lack quality in Central Defence following Konate's exit, but having Szoboszlai around to play during what should be the peak of his career guarantees a level of quality in Liverpool's Central Midfield for years to come.
